West Ham can avenge Moyes’ Alvarez howler by signing £48m “freight train of a striker” – opinion

West Ham United may have just acquired Danny Ings, but seemingly remain keen on bolstering further this window.

Perhaps David Moyes’ persistence to sign more strikers could see him looking to avenge his recent comments on the Diary of a CEO podcast, where he admitted to turning down a deal to sign Manchester City star and World Cup winner Julian Alvarez.

He claimed: “Just recently, because we’ve been talking about it, Alvarez who has just played for Argentina in the World Cup. I brought in a new scout who says ‘Look, you should go for Alvarez at River Plate’.

“I watched him and I thought he was a very good technician and done so many good things as a centre-forward. But I thought [he’s] maybe not quite the one we want, we had Michail Antonio who had been doing very well and I thought I don’t know.”

Since then, the Argentinian has gone on to score eight goals this season in all competitions, in addition to his four goals in Qatar too.

So, in an effort to ease fans’ worries regarding this butchered move, the Scotsman could seek out his own South American marksman in Duvan Zapata.

Having been linked earlier this week, the Hammers will battle with a number of Premier League clubs for a deal that could spell the end of Michail Antonio’s time at the London Stadium. Their interest remains despite the Italian outfit quoting suitors at a fee of €55m (£48m) in the most recent summer window.

Although he has been somewhat plagued with injuries this season, the Bergamo-based striker still has three goal contributions.

However, that is a far cry from his 20 goal contributions the season prior.

It was during that campaign that he ran Manchester United ragged, which will somewhat ease worries about his acclimation to the English game.

Scoring a goal and offering an assist in a 2-2 draw, the Colombian was a battering ram throughout and terrorised the Red Devils’ defence. He would win a further seven duels too, making two key passes to complete what was a fine performance, via Sofascore.

Such is his physicality, he was lauded by journalist Matteo Bonetti who dubbed him “a freight train of a striker” who was “one of the most prolific goal scorers in Europe.”

This came during his 23-goal league campaign during the 2018/19 season, which remains his most prolific year since joining Atalanta.

Now, he has announced himself as one of the best classic number nine’s in Europe, outlined in the fact that when compared to other strikers across the continent, he ranks in the top 7% for shot-creating actions, the top 2% for touches in the attacking penalty area, and the top 14% for aerials won, via FBref.

Zapata will offer a completely different dynamic to Ings or what Alvarez would have, one that arguably suits the Irons’ play style more. Should they acquire him and the Aston Villa marksman, there is no doubt they will emerge from this relegation battle in no time.
